Book Review: 100 Days of Sunlight by Abbie Emmons

“”It’s not easy-for anyone. But that’s okay. That’s good. The hard thing to do and the right thing to do are usually the same.””

[100 Days of Sunlight by Abbie Emmons, Weston, Chapter 6]

Synposis(taken from Goodreads):
When 16-year-old poetry blogger Tessa Dickinson is involved in a car accident and loses her eyesight for 100 days, she feels like her whole world has been turned upside-down. Terrified that her vision might never return, Tessa feels like she has nothing left to be happy about. But when her grandparents place an ad in the local newspaper looking for a typist to help Tessa continue writing and blogging, an unlikely answer knocks at their door: Weston Ludovico, a boy her age with bright eyes, an optimistic smile…and no legs. Knowing how angry and afraid Tessa is feeling, Weston thinks he can help her. But he has one condition — no one can tell Tessa about his disability. And because she can’t see him, she treats him with contempt: screaming at him to get out of her house and never come back. But for Weston, it’s the most amazing feeling: to be treated like a normal person, not just a sob story. So he comes back. Again and again and again. Tessa spurns Weston’s “obnoxious optimism”, convinced that he has no idea what she’s going through. But Weston knows exactly how she feels and reaches into her darkness to show her that there is more than one way to experience the world. As Tessa grows closer to Weston, she finds it harder and harder to imagine life without him — and Weston can’t imagine life without her. But he still hasn’t told her the truth, and when Tessa’s sight returns he’ll have to make the hardest decision of his life: vanish from Tessa’s world…or overcome his fear of being seen.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Review: I was expecting to enjoy this book. The synopsis intrigued me and come on, that cover is gorgeous.
But once I started reading it, I instantly fell in love with the characters and the story, I didn’t want to put it down! Tessa and Weston’s stories are so inspiring , and I highlighted so many things while reading it(thank you Kindle for having that feature).

I love Weston and Tessa’s banter throughout the book, with Weston’s unshakable optimism and Tessa’s pessimism. You can see how Weston helps bring Tessa out of her darkness, and how she shows him he is worth more than he thinks, as the story progresses.

“I was in control of my mind. I could choose to be happy, to be stronger, to be me-regardless of everything-and there was nobody standing in my way.”

[100 Days of Sunlight by Abbie Emmons, Weston, Chapter 20]

Both Tessa and Weston have amazing character growth through the book as well. Tessa learning that there are more ways to see the world than just through sight. Weston learning he isn’t the broken parts he may think he is.

There’s some amazing family and friend themes in this book. Between Weston and his brothers, and his friend Rudy. And between Tessa and her grandma and grandpa. Their relationships are amazing, and none of these ‘side’ characters felt flat, like some side characters do in books.

This has become one of my top favorite books of 2019(maybe even my #1 favorite of the year).
100 Days of Sunlight is an inspiring book that will fill you with hope, no matter what obstacles lie in your way. It will make you laugh, cry, and make you believe you can accomplish your dreams. I can’t wait to read the books Abbie will write in the future.

(I recieved an e-ARC from NetGalley in return for an honest review)

“I am drowning again. But this time I don’t need help. I don’t need a rescue. Because I am drowning in perfect beauty. I am drowning in reckless joy. I’ve fallen out of the tree. And now, I fly.”
